Pool Sanitation

Our pool is sanitized via an inorganic compound, calcium hypochlorite (unstablized chlorine). As such, it does not contain cyanuric acid and is very sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Stabilization

It is recommended that cyanuric acid be maintained at 20 to 40 ppm to decrease the breakdown of chlorine due to UV radiation (sunlight). These values are based upon a combination of recommendations by the State of Michigan Dept. of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), Pool & Hot Tub Association (PHTA) and Chemtrol unit.

Calcium Hypochlorite

Calcium Hypochlorite is the active ingredient in the Accu-Tab system.

Some notes regarding the addition of this product to the pool:

  • It does not contain Cyanuric acid (unlike trichlor), hence no stabilizer is continuously added to the pool, requiring an increase in the free chlorine (FC) level.
  • Calcium hypochlorite does not have a net effect upon pH, despite the common misconception otherwise. It does initially, as upon adding it to water, it produces hychlorous acid and sodium hydroxide (the latter raises pH). However, upon oxidizing, hydrochloric acid is produced, resulting in a net zero effect on pH.
